SIPS: Sharing our Industry for Public Service May 2025

At the 2025 IIBEC Annual Conference, Raymond Global, Inc. President, Mike Ramos, delivered an engaging and timely presentation aimed at equipping building enclosure professionals—and the broader architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry—with foundational knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) and its practical relevance. With a session classified under Enclosure and Roofing (EW, R) and approved for both IIBEC and AIA credits, Ramos broke down the often-hyped topic of AI into clear, actionable insights. He explored the current development landscape, addressed growing concerns around data privacy and regulation, and laid out a framework for how industry professionals can responsibly and effectively incorporate AI into their workflows.
Going beyond the surface-level fascination with tools like ChatGPT, Ramos showcased real-world use cases that demonstrate how AI can be purpose-built or integrated into the building enclosure space. Participants learned how to evaluate AI-generated outputs against the judgment of trained enclosure professionals, and how to thoughtfully plan for the long-term impacts of AI across the full A/E/C spectrum. His session underscored a key message: AI should not replace expertise but rather serve as a tool to enhance decision-making, streamline processes, and support better building performance.

Derek Cundiff presented at a regional meeting of the Virginia Building and Code Officials Association (VBCOA) on July 18. The session, attended by approximately 40 code officials from various jurisdictions in Southwest Virginia, focused on challenges related to code compliance for roof repair, recovery, and replacement projects in existing buildings.
Several examples of poor design and installation were reviewed. Derek highlighted the importance of utilizing IIBEC-credentialed design professionals such as RRCs and RROs as part of the project team to serve the best interests of building owners and occupants.
